What an incredible time of year to go fishing here in Venice, LA. Despite cold river water pouring down the Mississippi, the weather out at the floating rigs is warm and beautiful. We’ve been chunking for yellowfin tuna around the floating rigs and drill ships, which has put is in close contact with some of the biggest tunas in The Gulf! Â During our last few trips, we’ve seen dozens upon dozens of 100lb tunas sky rocketing into the air, blasting baits with a vengeance. Â There’s simply no better time to target these sky rocketing tunas with top water plugs than right now.
We’ve been catching these monsters with Yo Zuri and Williamson chuggers, and while it’s a challenge to stay in front of the fast moving schools – if you’re in the right place at the right time you can pull it off. Catching tunas on top water plugs is a truly epic experience that will challenge your big game angling capability beyond any expectation.
We’ve been field testing the new Penn Clash which is hands down one of the most impressive spinning reels coming to market in the next few months. Â This reel is absolutely bullet proof and puts the hurt on some of the toughest tunas in our waters.
Overall, the bite has been consistent out at the floating rigs. Â We’ve been following the bite in order to keep our crew on the fish, but the conditions do change regularly. Â For the most part, chunking or live baiting has been the ticket to some excellent fish fights.
The season will only get better as we move deeper into the spring. Â The tunas are here, feeding, and giving our anglers a staggering work out on a daily basis. Â We’ve been fortunate to enjoy some awesome stretches of weather, which should continue as we move away from the volatility of winter.
