February is a great month to catch tuna in Venice, LA. Charter fishing trips in February and March fill up quickly every year, as some of the largest tuna are caught during this time while fishing the Midnight Lump.
Tuna Fishing in February is Productive
The last few days of offshore fishing in Venice, LA, have been productive.
We started fishing on Friday. The forecast was calling for three-foot seas, and it was more like seven-foot seas. The forecast prevented us from heading to the east of Venice, where we would have liked to catch some yellowfin tuna.
We headed west where we crushed the wahoo last week, but we only had one wahoo to show for it on this trip.
On Saturday, the ride was still bumpy, but we managed to make it east. We started fishing for tuna and caught twelve blackfin tuna at the first stop. Then, we moved to the yellowfin tuna fishing spot and caught a 96 lb yellowfin and two 70 lb tunas before calling it a day.
On Sunday, the seas calmed down, and the fish were hungry. We hauled in three yellowfin tuna, a bunch of blackfin tuna, and warsaw grouper. Captain Scott ended the day with 20 Blackfin Tuna.
We were back at it again the next few days, reeling in a 120 lb yellowfin tuna in just 10 minutes on a topwater plug. Yep, T-E-N minutes. 💪
Both Captain Scott and Captain Hunter saw lots of big tuna all day, but the sharks and kings were so bad our baits did not stand a chance. We ended the day with a big yellowfin tuna, a pile of blackfin tuna, and we caught the legal limit of big amberjack. Captain Scott also caught a bunch of blackfin tuna, and he reeled in some nice Cobia.
